This series takes a fresh, sometimes challenging, look at some of the issues facing the actuarial profession and society
The ‘think’ series aims to promote debate on topics across the spectrum of actuarial work and beyond. It looks to provide a platform for members and stakeholders to share views that may differ from the IFoA’s ‘house’ view.
Through this, we hope to challenge the status quo within the profession, question orthodoxy, and shine a light on complex or under-examined issues. At its heart, the series is about stimulating discussion and dialogue to help tackle issues from a different perspective.
Our seventh publication in the ‘think’ series has been authored by Esther McNamara, Senior Health Policy Lead at the International Longevity Centre.
The piece argues that any discussion on longevity must encapsulate the breadth of human experience – from health to work, from work to finances, from finances to housing and from housing to communities.
As a result, Esther highlights the benefits of investing in preventative health measures as the best way to support healthier longer lives, using data from ILC’s global healthy ageing and prevention index which demonstrates how healthy life spans have fallen from 2019 to 2022 globally.
Read the complete publication to find out what role Esther believes our profession can play in addressing this problem, including why she thinks actuaries are “the secret, and to date perhaps under-used, weapon in improving longevity”.
