Speaking up plays a key role for Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) members. From time to time, members may be faced with difficult decisions around speaking up about certain matters which come to their attention.
The Actuaries’ Code (the Code) has 6 principles which members are to comply with in order to build and promote the confidence in the work of actuaries and the actuarial profession.

The Code highlights the importance of speaking up by making it a stand-alone principle and states that:
“Members should speak up if they believe, or have reasonable cause to believe, that a course of action is unethical or is unlawful.”
Raising an issue as soon as members are able to ultimately helps to protect the reputation of the actuarial profession, organisations employing actuaries, clients, customers and the wider public.
