Meet the DPB board

The membership of the Designated Professional Body (DPB) Board includes lay people as well as volunteer members of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA).

James is a partner of First Actuarial and until recently was responsible for the compliance of the firm. James is a Scheme Actuary and advises trustees and employers of occupational pension schemes.

Andrew is an actuary and Associate Partner of First Actuarial.

He has worked in the industry since 1998, working for Britannic Assurance (now Pearl) and Hazell Carr before becoming one of the founders of Quattro Pensions which was acquired by Broadstone Pensions Limited in 2021. Andrew then moved to First Actuarial in 2024. Andrew is a Scheme Actuary and advises trustees and employers of occupational pension schemes.

Alison Carr has a wealth of experience working with professional bodies and in regulation, most recently as a director of a large engineering institution (The Institution of Engineering and Technology) and prior to that as the chief executive of a regulatory body (the Architects Registration Board).

In spanning both regulatory and professional bodies, Alison has been able to promote the value of using professionals and has led and supported campaigns to improve diversity in the professions.

Alison has delivered significant changes in governance and improvements in both compliance and transparency which improve public confidence in professional and charitable bodies and their professional members.

Alongside executive roles, she was a pension fund trustee for four years and has held non-executive appointments, contributing to the strategic direction of organisations, supporting practice standards and the development of professionals.

John is an actuary and owner and Director of HJC Actuarial, which he founded in 2003 and which has advised over 100 clients since its’ inception. John has worked in the insurance industry since 1989, qualifying as an actuary in 1995, working for insurers, large audit firms and actuarial consultancies, becoming a Partner in a major global consulting firm in 2000. He provides independent advice to his clients on insurance strategy, presentation of risks and premium negotiation with insurers, including insurer solvency assessments, policy wordings and insurance broker selection.

His DPB client activity includes designing, marketing and negotiating bespoke insurance products for clients and estimating the fair value, marketing and negotiation of the cancellation (commutation) of client historic insurance policies to enable more efficient insurance structures to be put in place, often as a result of insurers’ schemes of arrangement.

Darius is the Head of Finance Risk Transformation & Control at a major UK general insurer focused on providing assurance over financial and regulatory reporting. Darius is also an experienced risk practitioner in designing and implementing risk and control frameworks, and advising on off-shoring control, emerging risk management, governance, regulatory changes, and transformation programmes.

Darius is member of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and a technical specialist member at the Institute of Risk Management (IRM). Darius also works in oversight positions across industries such as sport, financial services, education, health, and technology start-ups and uses the best practices approaches from these industries with his own technical skills to bring unique perspectives to support organisations.

Tim is a senior investment consultant at Broadstone. He has worked in the pensions industry since 2002 holding roles as a Scheme Actuary and Corporate Adviser before moving to investment consulting.

Sophie is a seasoned financial services internal audit and risk management professional, now serving as Strategy and Risk Advisor, with board role experience across various professional membership organisations, SMEs, and non-profits. She is an advocate for cognitive diversity and effective board governance, with membership of various NED networks across financial services.

As an executive, she has led major change programs over 25 years in large international investment banks, in particular working with their global audit, risk group and ethics and compliance departments. Initially an electronic engineering graduate, she has an MBA from London Business School, specialising in finance, strategy and organisational behaviour.

Sophie is a member of the IFoA’s Risk Management Board and Finance and Investment Board, and Chair of the Committee for Lifelong Learning in Risk Management. She is also a member of the Engineering UK Audit Risk and Investment Committee.
