The closing piece of the Climate Risk and Sustainability course is a capstone exercise that aims to draw together the course components and their application to actuarial practices. We are calling for individuals with knowledge in sustainability to come forward and volunteer as facilitators for this and our mid-course seminar. We believe the seminars will benefit greatly from having facilitators that can guide the groups to ensure they are meeting the objectives of this exercise. Learning outcomes for Module 5 (mid-course seminar)
- Discuss short-term thinking vs long-term problems.
- Outline intergenerational and intragenerational conflict that arises from business-as-usual approaches and the limits to growth.
- Describe the baked-in temperature increases and time delay impact of decisions.
- Explain changing demographics and population dynamics
Learning outcomes for Module 9 (Capstone Ex):
- Gain better insight into the impact of sustainability on the different aspects of a commercial organisation
- Show a clear understanding of all previous models and identify how they link into the work of an actuary
- Be able to work as a group to present on company strategy and risk management
- Discuss appropriate Scenario Analysis & modelling
A requirement is that volunteers must be a Fellow or Associate of the IFoA or a suitably qualified individual with experience in Climate Change and Sustainability

Task specification
The Head of Education Partnerships and Lifelong Learning is seeking to engage an experienced facilitator for the Climate Risk and Sustainability course:
- attend at least one but maybe two seminars each year that are held online
- have an excellent grasp of the intended learning outcomes for the course
- collaborate with the course team
- maximise learner participation and engagement during the seminars
- contribute to individual and programme evaluation/continuous quality improvement
- provides feedback to team to ensure programme design and delivery meets learning and programme goals
- moderates, assesses and monitors learner progress in accordance with requirements
- maximises learning outcomes via attention to the group and individual engagement and dynamics
- shows good leadership, guidance, and direction in the online learning environment
- sets the agenda, objectives of the discussion, the timetable, to effectively meet course goals
- keeps discussions and tasks on track, contributes special knowledge and insights, weaves together various discussion threads and course components, and maintains group harmony
- assumes roles compatible with online facilitation – consultant, guide, expert questioner, learning experience designer, resource provider, project leader
- attend at least one but maybe two seminars each year that are held online
Tenure
The Climate Risk and Sustainability course facilitator SEC role duration is normally for 1 year, renewable at the discretion of the Head of Education Partnerships and Lifelong Learning.
Time commitment
- At least four seminars are held each year.
- There are two online seminars for each course. Each session will last for three hours, they are held at the mid-point and end of each course.
- Each session will last for three hours, the default session time is 09:30 – 12:30 UK time but this will be confirmed ahead of the seminar.
- We would require you to be present for the entirety of the sessions.
- Allow at least 2-3 hours of preparation in advance of the seminar, in addition to 30 minutes before each seminar, and one hour after.
Person specification
We are looking for someone who:
- is a Fellow or Associate of the IFoA, or suitably qualified individual with experience in Climate Change and Sustainability
- is comfortable at public speaking
- can show experience of facilitating groups
- can demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of Climate Change and sustainability
In return, the SEC will receive:
- the chance to engage with the Engagement and Learning Directorate and to interact with participants to instill the key principles of Sustainability and Climate Change
- opportunities for CPD in line with the current scheme arrangements
This is a remunerated role and a fee will be paid
Mutually agreed services will be outlined in a ‘Schedule of services’ which will be provided to you on successful appointment. On successful completion of the services, you will be required to submit an invoice to the IFoA. The IFoA will provide you with a template invoice to use, and this invoice will be processed by a member of the IFoA’s Partnership team.
