Brian Hey Prize 2024 winners announced

The prestigious Brian Hey Prize 2024 was awarded at GIRO Conference 2024 to Neil Gedalla, Adam Smylie and Jade Lagrue for their paper ‘Parameterising capital modelling volatility: allowing for changes in volume’. Celebrated for its technical excellence and innovation, the paper offers practical advancements in general insurance actuarial practice.

This year’s competition saw a record number of submissions, highlighting the significance of the award. Two papers were highly commended:

  • ‘Claims inflation estimation: A practical guide for historical data’ by the IFoA’s Claims Inflation Working Party, applauded for its relevance and the accompanying claims generating tool.
  • ‘Privacy preserving neural network predictive modelling in insurance using horizontal federated learning’ by the IFoA’s Data Science Working Party, praised for exploring emerging techniques in secure collaboration.
