01 September 2023
In mid-June, the IFoA announced its Council had voted for changes, designed to strengthen and modernise the organisation’s governance. Having followed due process in posting the agreed changes on our website, the IFoA received written objections from 194 members which, under the terms of the constitution, requires Council to reconsider the changes.
Council re-convened on 1 September 2023 to discuss the objections and, in light of this feedback, decided to pause its deliberations until such time as the soon-to-be-elected new Council is established and fully informed of the rationale for the decisions made thus far. It also wished to continue to engage on this matter with members as a whole. While Council remains supportive of, and strongly advocates for, the need for the governance reforms as a whole, it will be for the newly elected Council to progress these reforms to the next stage, and it is appropriate that it has the opportunity to consider the matter fully. Council will take this forward as a priority, following the AGM.
We are grateful for your interest in the governance of the IFoA and its implications for the IFoA’s future, and for all of the many thoughtful and constructive contributions made to date. It is very important that, together, we work to address the issues giving rise to these changes, enabling the IFoA to be in the best position to navigate future challenges and opportunities on behalf of all of its members. We are keen to listen to member feedback and will be actively seeking your engagement as we progress this important piece of work in ensuring that our governance is fit for purpose, both now and in the future.
