The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) is delighted to announce that Tan Suee Chieh, Immediate Past President, has been awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters from Heriot-Watt University, in recognition of his distinguished career as a pioneering actuary and exceptional service to the actuarial profession. The degree was conferred at a ceremony that took place at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia on Sunday 13 February 2022.
Professor Mushtak Al-Atabi, Provost & CEO Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, said:
"Suee Chieh is a purpose-driven leader who is passionate about empowering our youth to mobilise their purpose into a positive impact on the world. He is a regular speaker at students’ events at many universities, including here at Heriot-Watt, successfully raising over £600,000 in scholarships for actuaries in Asia and leading the Actuaries for Transformational Change project. We are therefore proud to confer on him this honorary doctorate."

Tan Suee Chieh, Immediate Past President, IFoA, said:

It provides an excellent context for me to play my part to help ensure the IFoA and the actuarial profession continues to flourish in Malaysia and South-East Asia in the many years to come.”
This recognition marks the sustained contribution and dedication of Suee Chieh, particularly towards the actuarial community in Greater China and South-East Asia, ensuring that the profession continues to flourish for many future generations to come.

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) is a royal chartered, not-for-profit, professional body.
Research undertaken by the IFoA is not commercial. As a learned society, research helps us to fulfil our royal charter requirements to further actuarial science and serve the public interest.
Actuaries provide commercial, financial and prudential advice on the management of a business’s assets and liabilities, especially where long term management and planning are critical to the success of any business venture. They also advise individuals, and advise on social and public interest issues.
Members of the IFoA have a statutory role in the supervision of pension funds and life insurance companies. They also have a statutory role to provide actuarial opinions for managing agents at Lloyd’s of London.
Members are governed by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. A rigorous examination system is supported by a programme of continuing professional development and a professional code of conduct supports high standards reflecting the significant role of actuaries in society.
The IFoA is available to provide independent expert comment to the media on a range of actuarial-related issues, including COVID-19 and its long term consequences, mortality, pensions, life and general insurance, health and care, finance and investment, climate change and sustainability, systems thinking, uncertainty and judgement, and risk management.
