The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) is delighted to announce the winners of the Frank Redington Prizes. The prizes were launched in October 2021 to encourage and promote thought leadership in actuarial science.
This open essay competition, supported by major sponsorships from Milliman and Punter Southall, sought views on two topics and the winners are as follows:
What would be a sustainable economic and finance system for the public interest?
The judging panel also decided to commend two entries by Professor Aled Jones Hon FIA and Sandy Trust FIA.
What would be a sustainable and effective UK pension system for the people?
There was no clear winner in this category so the judges decided to equally commend three entries from:
The judging panel was comprised of Sir John Kay, Economist and Chair of the Judging Panel, Torsten Bell, Chief Executive at the Resolution Foundation, Hon Group Captain Sally Bridgeland FIA, Chair and Non-Executive Director at asset management and insurance companies, and Rt Hon David Heath CBE, Chair of the IFoA Policy Advisory Group.
Sir John Kay, Economist and Chair of the Judging Panel, said: “We received a wide range of submissions for both topics covered by these prizes. It is clear that a lot of time, effort and serious thought has gone into the essays being considered by the judging panel. We found it fascinating to read about the original ideas and potential solutions being put forward which aim to tackle some of the biggest challenges of our time. We would like to congratulate all those receiving the Frank Redington Prizes for demonstrating how actuarial science can engage with these complex societal issues.”
Matt Saker, IFoA President, said: "These prizes have been a continuation of our 2021 Thought Leadership series focussed on ‘Finance in the Public Interest’. They are part of a wider strategy to encourage and promote critical thinking in areas of actuarial science through a public interest lens and we’ve been impressed by the creative ideas from our winning and commended entries. We would like to thank our panel of judges for their time and interest in the Frank Redington Prizes. We would also like to thank our sponsors Milliman and Punter Southall for helping to support this endeavour.”

Members of the IFoA have a statutory role in the supervision of pension funds and life insurance companies. They also have a statutory role to provide actuarial opinions for managing agents at Lloyd’s of London.
Members are governed by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. A rigorous examination system is supported by a programme of continuing professional development and a professional code of conduct supports high standards reflecting the significant role of actuaries in society.
The IFoA is available to provide independent expert comment to the media on a range of actuarial-related issues, including COVID-19 and its long term consequences, mortality, pensions, life and general insurance, health and care, finance and investment, climate change and sustainability, systems thinking, uncertainty and judgement, and risk management.
