Sustainability external policy volunteers

Application closing date: 15 September

The Sustainability Board is looking for new IFoA resource volunteers, who report into the Sustainability Board, to help lead external engagements and projects, with bodies that have asked for IFoA input and support on sustainability. This includes governments (UK and others), industry bodies, regulators and professional bodies.

Whilst the regulatory agenda ebbs and flows, we are predicting that the volume of requests for IFoA support will increase. This vacancy is open to IFoA members and non-members, as we look to expand our pool of experts to represent the IFoA.

We are looking for individuals who have a credible track record in this space who would be able to step up and act as an ambassador for the IFoA. This role is about representing the IFoA professionally and engaging with the external bodies in line with the strategic aims and ambitions of the IFoA, in the context of public duty.

What are the IFoA’s advocacy priorities?

  • Advocate for the development of consistent policy frameworks worldwide that aim to achieve the Paris Agreement objectives through a just transition
  • Advocate for the development of effective methods of incentivising reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, such as carbon pricing
  • Use the actuarial skill set and influence to help equip the wider global financial services markets to accelerate a just and sustainable transition to net zero
    • Offering a Climate Risk and Sustainability course and incorporating sustainability into our curriculum
  • Advocate for better disclosure of consistent and robust information about climate risk by corporates and other market participants
    • Climate reports
    • Climate Scenarios Committee and meetings with regulators
  • Support collaborations both between its members and with other organisations to help align national and global financial systems with a just, net zero, sustainable economy
    • CCAG, Exeter, Carbon Tracker, Academy of Medical Sciences, SFEC, PBCAC

How will this volunteer role work?

When opportunities arise, the IFoA and Sustainability Board members will quickly take a view on if IFoA should engage and if there is enough capacity. At that stage, the Manager of Public Policy may then approach actuaries on the ‘list’ to support assignments, following the standard engagement pathway:

  1. You would be briefed on the assignment, IFoA’s objectives and broad approach
  2. You would engage with the relevant body on the work
  3. Keep the IFoA up to speed with regular check ins
  4. Undertake other tasks, for example briefings, commenting on drafts as needed. This may well include others in syndication of drafts for wider input
