Disciplinary Pool – actuary panel members

Application closing date: 30 November

We are looking for members to join the Disciplinary Pool.

When a complaint is made about the conduct of an IFoA member (or former member) the IFoA’s regulatory framework is enforced, by an independent disciplinary process, to protect the public interest, uphold the reputation of the profession and to enforce regulatory standards. Members of the Disciplinary Pool play an important role in the process.

Disciplinary Pool members have the opportunity to sit as part of independent disciplinary panels considering complaints and determining outcomes. The majority of IFoA hearings relate to the determination of cases involving allegations of misconduct, but the remit of the role also extends to cases going through the capacity for membership and readmission processes.

For more information, see Independent Disciplinary Process. Further information on the role is available in the task and person specification (PDF, 65 KB).

Should I apply?

  • We are committed to promoting diversity, equality of opportunity, and inclusion, within all our vacancies and we actively encourage applications from a diverse range of potential candidates. Recognising and embracing the unique and diverse talents of our volunteers is fundamental to the success of our organisation.
  • Successful candidates are appointed to a ‘pool’ of actuary and lay (non actuary) panel members. Within the pool we seek to create a diverse range of practice expertise and geographic spread. It doesn’t matter where you are based around the globe, as most matters require participation in hearings online.
  • Training is provided on the specific features of the disciplinary system. Legal support, in particular, is provided to panels.
  • Volunteers who undertake this work find it fascinating. They enjoy working with other actuaries and with lay professionals. Decisions are shared and care is taken to make sure your day job does not suffer.
  • There are also CPD opportunities, the work will develop your technical skills and collaborative decision-making in particular.
  • We are particularly interested in hearing from proactive volunteers, whether working or retired, with an interest in professional discipline and standards. If you are interested in being part of this pool but are not sure whether you have the skills? Please see next steps below, and consider an informal discussion prior to applying.

Time commitment

The time commitment is not onerous and is based around your availability and the number of cases referred. Actuary panel members may be called upon to sit on up to four panels per year. Complaints assessment panels and disciplinary orders panels normally require half a day. Interim orders panel and adjudication panel normally require a single day. Disciplinary tribunal panel hearings and capacity for membership hearings may take a single day or multiple days depending on the number of charges/respondents and the complexity of the case.
